With a brilliant stroke, Walter shows his family history through variant stages of their lives: the death of Cathy's beloved step-father, the miscarriage of her first child, the Vietnam War, the political arena that effected American industrialism. This ambitious, stylistically wonderful epic, features many biblical patriarchs as well as Germanic Norse legends, integrating the whole into quite a unique offering. Without a doubt, Walter has achieved a great novel, nicely contrasting Cathy's past physicality with her current frailty, living each day in positive hopes of entering God's Paradise promise.
