Had Jefferson Davis or other Confederate leaders implicitly or explicitly approved of either the Lincoln kidnapping plot, or the assassination plot itself? Was Samuel Mudd an actual conspirator, or was he simply the unlucky doctor who set the leg of the most wanted man in America? Was Mary Surratt an active conspirator, or did her townhouse (and earlier, her tavern) simply serve as the clubhouse for the other conspirators?
