Harry Houdini (1874 - 1926) lived an amazing life. Born into near poverty he became one of the highest paid performers of his era. He was an accomplished magician who could make an elephant disappear before thousands of cheering fans. As the master of escapes, he accepted and triumphed over challenges from people that dared to think that they could restrain him with their iron chains and locks. In later years he toured throughout the United States giving lectures about the deceit of spiritualism and the pall it carried over the public. Any single one of these feats makes an interesting subject to an awaiting readership; the combination of all three makes sensational storylines even years after his death. He was fearless to accept the unknown and the belief in his own abilities to overcome: "my brain is the key that sets me free" was his favorite truism. A magician - an escape artist - a silent movie actor - first man to fly a plane in Australia (1910) - and spiritualism debunker. Houdini always made for a captivating tale. Few legendary men, real or imagined, retain their celebrity nearly 100 years after their passing. However, Harry Houdini was one such man.
